thistlepearl asked: Umm one last question! How were you able to determine the pricing of your commissions? I did read your FAQ about it but what were other factors that were put into it?

I decide my price based on how much time I spend on it. If a client is paying the minimum worthwhile price in my eye but I don’t have the time for it, I raise my price. Technically if you want business you should also factor in how much your art is worth, but this is a personal approach because I hate drawing commissions most of the time and I have a choice not to do them unless they reward me generously, resulting in ridiculously expensive prices on my part. Hope that helps!

boogboog asked: hello! you have become very successful with your blackbird/carciphona comic. I started reading it back when you were still working on the first version! I was just wondering how your parents feel about your working on graphic novels and self publishing and just art in general? I also like to draw and make comics and things, but my parents never really have much to say about my stuff or give me much support. So do your parents support you on your art making? If so, how?

Hello! First of all, I consider myself to be incredibly lucky to be able to maintain the comic but I wouldn’t say it is very successful compared to what some of my friends and colleagues have accomplished. Thanks for sticking around for such a long time though!

As for my parents, they’ve gone through a number of reactions towards what I want to do for a career, mostly because I was pretty vague about it to then until 2 years ago by just keeping to myself and going on with my music degree. For many years they never really vocally objected this possibility, nor did they clearly give me the signal that this is ok. Every time this is brought up it usually becomes a discussion of art as a viable career and its pros and cons with no definite conclusion. The only thing we agreed on is it is unstable, I cannot rely on putting my all into art all my life because I will age and not be able to stretch myself as much as I can now, and that I don’t have education to back me up.

I was pretty clear to myself that I want to spend some time to see if I can get anywhere with art after I graduate from music, and I asked them for a year or so of time. They said ok because they’re not the tyrannical unreasonable type of parents; sometimes I feel bad because I know so well how much I can bully them (I don’t bully them fyi) but even then for the first year, especially the first half a year, they went between accepting this as a transition period to being worried enough to ask me to hand them large sums of money just to prove that I am making progress or just to make me realize I can’t keep this up.

I was lucky I happened to be doing ok after a year or so. They aren’t nearly as worried about my career now, mostly about my health because of how much I work just because I love working. They are supportive in the sense that they’re not telling me what to do; they’ve already let me know their concerns, made it clear that they are willing to help if I need any, they would always love it if I changed my mind and went for a steady job sometime down the line, but they’re leaving the rest to me. This is the best possible message they can get across to me, for my personality anyway; they don’t try to be enthusiastic about my works because they know I don’t like it, and we both know they’re not interested in art.

With all that said, that was MY situation and my personality; I like to be left alone. I have some friends who have major problems about this style of “support” from me because it just comes off as not giving a crap, so maybe you need something different. I don’t know how old you are, but if you’re a teenager I can also see your parents’ lack of concern as just thinking of this as another phase in your life that you may lose interest in over time. It’s tiring to keep up with young people because they change their minds so quickly and brashly. Lastly, you could consider the opposite scenario where your parents are overly enthusiastic about your endeavours; I’m pretty sure if that happened you would probably wish they would leave you alone about it because you would start to feel very conscious about what you do, and probably annoyed by constant input from people who don’t know anything about anime/comics/art

I don’t like the way you draw faces—particularly the proportions of the eyes to the nose. Often the nose looks too short and narrow compared to what seems like two spectacularly wide (and I mean the ‘stretched out horizontally’ kind of wide) eyes. I’ve been following you for years, and. Well. This is one thing that really hasn’t changed and I swear this is the only thing about your artwork that seriously bugs me because I’m nitpicky like that.
It’s hard to change because I don’t see it until years down the road, and when I take steps in advancing I do things slowly so there’s never much progress! hopefully some day in the distant future it will be fixed (:

i won’t tell something i dislike about you, but it’s kinda stupid so i’ll say it as anon still. some seven years ago when i was at the brink of finding out that, that thing i loved was called anime, i happened to find some REALLY beautiful anime style pics that gived MUCH inspiration and now i just wondered and looked at your carciphona and main character looks just like the one in those pictures ;O; i’m so moved, i don’t know if it’s it but if so, such a touching and important moment for me T3T

It’s really great to hear that what I do inspires you ;; It’s an honour to be able to motivate others to create their own stuff!

I’d actually prefer you release your manga out in chapters, because when I read it, usually I forget what happened on the last two pages xD (I understand it takes a long time to draw/edit them and stuff lol)

I remember having done that kind of release at least 5 or 6 years ago, and honestly I would, if not for the fact that I think I would lose a lot of readers because people would forget to come back over time. Maybe when I can draw more frequently and when I can afford to lose any amount of audience, I will try that!

Anonymous asked: personally i like your semi-realism or realism art better than your anime. what do you think? and was it easy to transition from anime to your current style?

I can’t tell if people are answering my reblog or just plain taking advantage of the reopening of anon asks ;_; I read and delete some msgs that weren’t questions but now I feel bad answering msgs that are actually questions like I’m ignoring the others

As for your question, I honestly don’t know which of my drawings would fit in which of your categories, minus the super kawaii cell shaded animu pictures LOL;; it wasn’t easy to find something that worked for me and it took a lot of time blindly trying different things, but I don’t think it was really a transition from anime to nonanime or things like that, just getting to know what works for me best.

Anonymous asked: Why don't you like your character Meron? Also who is your favorite and least favorite in Carciphona?

I don’t like Meron because she has no self esteem and measures herself entirely based on the opinions of others. In terms of character, Meron and des are my least favourite characters and blackbird/veloce are my favourite. In terms of how much I enjoy working out the characters, keri and des are my least fav while keri and veloce’s parents—they are not related—are actually my favourite, it just so happen I can’t say anything about them ):

sprtwolf asked: just wanted to say that you are a really amazing artist and a huge inspiration. I wanted to improve my art (people, clothes, etc.) and i just wanted to ask how do you go about these things? study your surroundings? practice anatomy? do tutorials? and what do you do when you're at a loss for what to draw? how do you find inspiration?

Thank you for your compliment! For all my years of doing art as a hobby (which is pretty much everything up until 2-3 years ago) I wasn’t very good at learning or getting better. Everything sort of happen by accident and usually I learn extremely slowly. I would try to learn from my surroundings as I would now but back then it wasn’t doing much for me because I just did not know enough to be able to analyze and draw meaningful information from observation by myself. But even then I just relied on this method of teaching myself because I wasn’t going to go at art hardcore or I would start to dislike drawing. I seldom practiced anything, and everything I learned, I learned through the process of producing finished work (illustrations, manga, etc, stuff I can post/sell)

I am rarely ever at a loss for what to draw or a lack of inspiration, especially now, because I just don’t have the time to do what I want to do. The only time this happens would be when my productivity mentality kicks in and I become conscious about what I’m putting out. Like I look back at my recent pieces and go “jeez, I drew a lot of complex out of universe illustrations, I need to keep a good balance of my work by drawing something in character and simpler” or “my artist alley display collection could use a kawaii desu picture or two, I should make something like that”. That’s like consciously driving a car into a wall and it’s not art block if you’re making it happen yourself.

I find inspiration by indulging in beautiful things. gorgeous drawings, photos, designs, sculptures, music, stories, scene and environment would all inspire me. But you should probably remember that inspiration doesn’t mean it have to be positive or beautiful; it is just my preference, and you should find what you connect best with yourself! This and my lifestyle make my drawings and stories all pretty shallow; no matter how down to earth my characters and art may look at first, they probably would never be able to connect with some of life’s most intrinsic traits and thus with some viewers. But I’m not going to terrorize myself with reality and lose the ability to appreciate luxurious beauty because once a pilot loses trust in his plane, he wouldn’t be able to fly it anymore (yay mayday reference!) I’ll leave those specialties to other artists.

icesplendor asked: How did you learn Mandarin/Cantonese/English, and at what ages? I'm curious about your language acquisition history.

I was born in a cantonese speaking part of china, and all of china requires mandarin to be used in schools so both are kind of my mother tongues! I started learning english in grade 4 in China but as you know, second languages learned as a requirement through school often mean nothing cus there is no use for them, and I really got to learn english when I was 12 when I immigrated to Canada.
